Natural Oils and Your Pores

Have you ever wondered what goes into the process of selecting oils for use in natural face and body products here at Second Spring Naturals? One major consideration, among many others, is the comedogenic factor of each oil and butter.

We are often asked if our face cream, for instance, is comedogenic. The term comedogenic refers to the oil's pore-clogging capability (Journal of American Academy of Dermatology). Our creams are made up of several oils that work in conjunction with one another. We consider aborption rate, nutrient content, overall feel, but also the comedogenic factor of each.

Therefore, we thought we would offer a quick guide from the Journal of American Academy of Dermatology that one of our main suppliers, Wholesale Supplies Plus, includes for their formulators. As they were gracious enough to include it for use in our own marketing, we would like to pass it on to our customers for educational purposes.

Comedogenic Rating Scale (Meaning Causing Acne)

You will notice we use shea and mango butters in many of our products, along with oils containing a rating between 0-2 for creams. You will find the heavier oils in products like soap, or perhaps a lip scrub, but not in a cream that you will apply to your face or body.

We love oils like sunflower, grape seed, apricot kernel, sweet almond and avocado, and you will even find pumpkin seed oil in some of our lighter lotions (currently sold out online).
